Every time someone uses the phrase “moral obligation,” I worry that my eyes are going to roll so far back in my head that I won’t be able to get them positioned forward again and stumble aimlessly for the rest of my life.
This morning, I awoke to an opinion from NewNowNext, a website powered by the Logo Network, that made the claim that queer people have a moral obligation to be vegetarians. Elizabeth Enochs, who is bisexual, lamented the fact that she attended her first LA Pride and found more meat vendors than vendors that catered to vegetarians.
Here’s a sampling of what Enochs had to say:
“The idea that the exploitation of cows, chickens, and pigs is acceptable, while the exploitation of dogs and cats is not, is based on the flawed belief that animals used for food are somehow less worthy of compassion. This is the same logic that homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, sexism, racism, ableism, and every other form of discrimination are based on. Like every group of humans that has ever been labeled ‘other,’ farmed animals are bullied and killed simply because society has deemed them undeserving of our love or concern, their bodily autonomy and desire for a happy life somehow ‘different.’ It’s exactly why I feel like the LGBTQ community has a special responsibility to stand up for all animals—we should be able to empathize with voiceless victims of violence.”

I wonder if Enochs has ever set foot on a farm in her life. I wonder if she’s ever attended a county fair or gone to a breakfast on the farm. While I can’t speak for Long Beach, California, where she lives, there are a lot of farms in Wisconsin, and most of them care for the comfort of the animals they keep. The fallacy that all farm animals are “bullied” is absurd.
For me, one of the highlights of the year are the farm brunches hosted by certain farms in June. The farmers show thousands of people around their property and explain what goes into producing the milk, beef, corn and other food staples that people enjoy. At this year’s brunch for Shawano County, the farmers took the education a step further and had veterinarians, nutritionists and other experts explain the regular care they receive and the specialized, ever-evolving diet the cows are fed.
What did Enochs have to back up her argument? Statistics? Research? Nope. Just vague statements like “The Big Gay Ice Cream truck actually makes a point of serving only dairy-based ice cream, despite the well-documented fact that so much suffering goes into dairy production,” not to mention claims of moral righteousness akin to a hellfire-and-brimstone preacher who claims all homosexuals are abominations.
If she wants to live a vegan lifestyle, that is her call. If she prefers to be around vegans so that the sight of a steak or an omelet doesn’t make her cry or vomit, that is her choice. Likewise, it is our choice whether we dine on a salad or a steak. Our sexuality is not a choice, but what we eat is. We don’t like when other people insist on dictating who is in our bed, and we don’t like when someone tries to manage our pantries, either. I won’t shove a slab of beef in Enoch’s refrigerator if she won’t replace my 2 percent milk with soy milk.
I’m more than a little tired of members of the LGBTQ community creating nebulous litmus tests that, if you’re truly a member of the community, you should behave a certain way. The community exists because we’re different, and we believe we have the right to be different. As long as it doesn’t physically harm other people, you should do what you please. Love who you want, live how you want, and eat what you want.
Great words, as always! I love you for you… And the next time you are here in AZ, I am going to take you to the local cafe for breakfast. Choose what you want, I am having bacon and eggs.
