Marge and in charge: ‘Simpsons’ owns campaign adviser

Sometimes, politics can be funny. That might seem like a bizarre thing to say in this day and age, considering that most politicians are about as popular as a colonoscopy, but bear with me on this one.

We’re used to politicians taking jabs at each other. Occasionally, they resort to picking on an average Joe just to soothe their overinflated egos. This time, though, one decided to mock the Democratic nominee for vice president, Kamala Harris, by comparing her to America’s sweetheart, Marge Simpson.

Jenna Ellis, a senior campaign adviser for Donald Trump, said on Twitter that Harris’s voice sounds the same as the blue-haired cartoon character that has graced our television sets for more than 30 years. Considering how long “The Simpsons” have been intermingled with American culture and the fact that the cartoon shows no sign of going off the air, maybe that wasn’t the gold standard insult we’ve come to expect from Trump and his crew.

Most folks would probably let the negative comment pass, but anyone who has ever watched “The Simpsons” know that keeping mum on something controversial is just not something the show does. In fact, Trump has been a foil for off-color humor on the show many times over the years.

So the show tweeted a bit from Marge herself, where she says: “I usually don’t get into politics, but the president’s senior adviser, Jenna Ellis, just said Kamala Harris sounds like me. Lisa says she doesn’t mean it as a compliment. If that’s so, as an ordinary suburban housewife, I’m starting to feel a little disrespected. I teach my children not to name-call, Jenna. I was going to say I’m pissed off, but I’m afraid they’d bleep it.”

When I was able to pick myself up off the floor from a big fit of laughter, I couldn’t help but notice how classy and at the same time jabbing the commentary was. Trump has been vowing to get the vote of the “suburban housewife,” but somehow I don’t think he’ll get them all after making Marge Simpson mad. I wonder if he plans to apologize to them, the same way he’s apologized to other groups he’s insulted, like… like…

Okay, never mind. I digress.

Interestingly enough, once Marge bit back on Ellis’s insult, Trump supporters on Twitter rose up to demand that the fictional character be taken off the air—and her little family, too.

Mark Dice tweeted: “Just cancel yourself before you completely ruin your legacy.”

Then there was the comment tweeted by Gio’s Ignatius J Fat guy’s Content Corner (Try saying that five times fast): “Just go off the air already, please, take what meager shreds of dignity you have left and pack it in, its 20 years past due.”

It’s ironic when bullies like these two are cheering folks like Ellis when they make such insults, but when the subjects of those insults stage a comeback, they clasp their pearls in horror and act like the end of civilization is nigh. I’ve got news for these folks—being civilized went right out the window in the last presidential election, so Marge’s rapier wit is nothing by comparison.

I had to chuckle when these folks suggested that “The Simpsons” be cancelled. Of course, I remember when the show first came on the air in 1989 and the prim and proper crowd demanded that the show be pulled because it was deemed to be a bad influence on children. Schools were banning Simpsons T-shirts and other merchandise.

Even President George H.W. Bush criticized the show in 1992 when he was running for re-election, saying: “We are going to keep on trying to strengthen the American family, to make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like the Simpsons.” Bush didn’t get a second term—I can’t imagine why.

Of course, the folks over at “The Simpsons” took a jab at those comments way back when, too. When the family was watching Bush’s speech, Bart commented: “Hey, we’re just like the Waltons. We’re praying for an end to the Depression, too.”

It’s amusing that “The Simpsons” was reviled by the right 31 years ago for being too vulgar for America, and now, in 2020, the right is proving itself to be more vulgar than “The Simpsons.” I can’t wait to see what Trump’s campaign pulls out next. If Kamala Harris dares to gain any weight, the advisers might draw parallels to Miss Piggy. Maybe if Ellis tried to compare her to Lois Griffin from “Family Guy” instead…

No, that wouldn’t work. The show would probably send Stewie to take Ellis out.

In the meantime, though, Ellis and the rest of Trump’s campaign should probably focus on getting him reelected and avoid trying to bring “The Simpsons” into the fray. Other presidents have tried to take on Marge and her family, and they’re still standing. There are just some forces out there you shouldn’t mess with.
